Starting from Boston in 1895 Slocum crossed the Atlantic to Gibraltar only to discover he would have to change his route. He then followed Magellan's course south-westwards and after recrossing the Atlantic, sailed through the straits, crossed the Pacific, the Indian and after recrossing the Atlantic again, for the third time, arrived back home, having covered 46,000 miles in three years, entirely under sail and entirely alone.
