as a carpenter - our lap joints in construction to secure strengh are usually 1.5 times the width of the timber we use (4'' timber would imply 6'' lap) but since your using ply in the words of larry pardy -' Large, wide plywood bulkheads have to be scarfed or butted on butt blocks......'page 191 (if you got his book)
